Abstract

This paper presents a case of conversion disorder characterized by mixed paralysis (sensory and motor) that involved the left half of the body. The patient, 62 years old, was sent to the interconsultation from her physicians, after being explored by different diagnosis methods without obtaining pathologic results. The authors evaluate the importance of this kind of syndromes in the clinical practice of a general hospital and the need for a correct detection, evaluation, and intervention of these, being indispensable the study of the individual symptoms forward psychiatric labels in order to understand the psychological underlying mechanisms. In the same way, it being confirmed the relevance of the hysteria concept and its subtypes (dissociate and conversive) like operative elements in spite of the classifications of mental disorders tries of reduce importance to these terms and offer supposedly more aseptic and neutral descriptions.
