Abstract

MARTINEZ AZUMENDI, Óscar. La Razón de la Sin Razón", magazine of the pensioners in an asylum institute, and the other "sane" periodicals of the time (1865, 1879-1881). Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2015, vol.35, n.125, pp.193-214. ISSN 2340-2733.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S0211-57352015000100017.

Magazines and periodicals written and edited by people with mental illness, first in psychiatric hospitals and more recently in other care settings, have a long tradition as an occupational-therapeutic resource aimed at both distraction and individual improvement, as well as a means of advertising of the institution itself. However, with few exceptions, such productions have attracted little academic or historical interest about its therapeutic utility, or the value that their pages contain as an historiographical documentary source. Accompanied by a reproduction of the first issue of "La Razón de la Sin Razón", published in 1865 in San Baudilio's Asylum (Barcelona) with the participation of institutionalized psychiatric patients, and perhaps being the first magazine of its kind in continental Europe and the first with a psychiatric thematic in Spain, the paper summarizes its evolution, including some examples of the type of published content, and the echo generated in the press at its time.

Keywords : Moral Treatment; Lunatic Literature; Literary madmen; Psychiatric patients publications; Occupational Therapy.
