Abstract

BENEDICTO, Clara. Gender discomfort and socialization: feminism as a crack. Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2018, vol.38, n.134, pp.607-625.  Epub Feb 01, 2021. ISSN 2340-2733.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0211-57352018000200014.

We live in a patriarchal and neoliberal context, where gender and other axis of power influence us as individuals and also how we interact with each other and build citizenship. Self-esteem, autonomy or the role of emotions are determined by gender commands: what masculine is –therefore, hegemonic and powerful- and what feminine is –therefore, subordinate and invisible-. Hence, the definition and approach to mental health are also patriarchal and so it is our way to understand mental illness. A gender perspective and a feminist look are proposed as a methodology to reflect on inequalities, value what we have in common and rebuild ourselves from vulnerability and interdependence.

Keywords : gender identity; mental health; feminism; health equity; gender and health; sexism.
