Abstract
PALACIOS COLUNGA, Cristina Mariel; RANGEL FLORES, Yesica Yolanda and ARZUAGA SALAZAR, Mª Angélica. Psychosocial meanings and expectations about treatment in women survivors of breast cancer. Index Enferm [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.4, pp.308-311. Epub June 27, 2022. ISSN 1699-5988.
Objective:
Understand the psychosocial meanings and expectations of women breast cancer survivors of treatment.
Methods:
During 2018-2020, a phenomenological study was carried out in which twelve women were interviewed in depth.
Results:
It was identified that this experience profoundly affects them during diagnosis, treatment and in later stages; reconfiguring the way they perceive their body, couple and / or family relationships, lifestyle and self-concept. Women perceive social pressures related to the ways of coping with the disease, they pretend to be strong in the public sphere and they weaken in intimacy.
Main conclusion:
Women experience treatment based on what gender dogmas dictate and in a patriarchal context where the identity of mother ignores that of person. Going through treatment implies reconfiguring their personality and social relationships.
