Worldwide the accelerated population aging is a challenge for health professionals. In this sense, nursing must promote the autonomy in the health of the elderly with an active participation in social and political changes, which have an impact on their lives.

In this opinion article, we reflect on the adoption of a gerontological approach that allows to the nursing discipline to enhance the active social roles of older people. In this way, the professional vision is enriched in the social and cultural aspects that affect old age, favoring a comprehensive care of the elderly.
