This work is devoted to the evaluation of the antibacterial activity of Tantum verde® mouth-rinsing solution and its supposedly only active principle, benzidamine HCl. For this reason, the activity in vitro of Tantum verde and benzidamine HCI was tested by measuring MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) by means of serial dilutions on solid medium. Eight bacterial species commonly used and a set of oral pathogenic microorganisms isolated from clinical samples in the laboratory were studied. Results showed an actual bactericidal effect on oral pathogens such as Actinomyces, Bacillus, Actinobacillus, Veillonella o Streptococcus. Moreover, Tantum verde as a mouth rinsing solution had a higher antibacterial activity than its active principle (benzidamine HCl). This suggests that the presence of low concentrations of ethanol present in the composition of Tantum verde contributes remarkably to the antibacterial action.
