Introduction: The choice of a child's birthplace is a family right recognized for years. Providing the necessary information to take the right decision is an obligation for health care professionals. Objective: To compare clinical practice, legislation and requirements in countries with higher rates of childbirths at home. Methods: A bibliographical search is carried out in the different databases and an intended search in professional colleges of midwives and nurses as well. Results: Similarity is observed in clinical practice but the legislation, funding and requirements for its practice vary significantly from country to country. Discussion and conclusions: The safety of childbirth at home continues being a source of discrepancy among health care professionals and is the reason for important differences in international policies.
