Abstract

ESTEPA DEL ARBOL, Miriam; MOYANO ESPADERO, M.ª Carmen; PEREZ BLANCAS, Carolina  and  CRESPO MONTERO, Rodolfo. Effectiveness of patient safety programs. Enferm Nefrol [online]. 2016, vol.19, n.1, pp.63-75. ISSN 2255-3517.

Introduction: Patient safety is a major component of quality of care, which in recent years has become very important. Objective: To know the current bibliographic production on the implementation of programs or measures on patient safety. Methods: An electronic search in the database Pubmed and Health & Medical Complete was conducted during February to May 2015. Scientific articles in English and Spanish writing were included; and studies evaluating any program of patient safety were analyzed, excluding those without results. Results: The monitoring of a checklist in the operating theater was effective in reducing complications; the strategy for hand hygiene showed high compliance rates especially in insulation services and intensive care units; the project bacteremia Zero was effective in reducing infections related to central venous catheter; fall prevention program lacks sufficient evidence to confirm the effectiveness; patient wristband showed high implementation but low professional involvement; and evaluation of programs to prevent medication errors is scarce although analyzed cases have been associated with risk reductions. Conclusions: There are many safety programs, designed and adapted for each institution. However the studies carried out to assess the effectiveness of these strategies once established were scarce.
