Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of a program of physical exercise on nutritional status and physical condition of obese and morbidly obese candidates for bariatric surgery. Material and methods: 18 women and 4 men between the ages of 18 and 60 year old candidates for bariatric surgery, 16 with morbid obesity and 6 with obesity and comorbidities were subjected to a program of physical exercise, with nutritional and psychological support during 5 months (3 session/week), before and 72 hours after the last meeting were evaluated: weight, body mass index (BMI), contour waist (CW), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, cardio respiratory fitness, bioenergetics, dynamic force maximum and hand grip strength. Results: The weight (p = 0.000), BMI (p = 0.000) and the CW (p = 0.000) showed significant changes with the intervention. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure did not improve significantly (p > 0.05). Cardio capacity, maximum dynamic force, hand grip strength and the bioenergetics capacity improved its levels reached statistical significance (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The intervention was feasible of developing, with high adhesion, it did not present risk for the health of the subjects and the physical condition increased significantly, in addition each 1 kg of weight lost there was a decrease of approximately 0,5 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 1 cm in the contour waist, improving the conditions of the participants.
