Introduction: Due to population aging there is growing concern about the long-term sustainability of social protection and pension systems. Health problems and disabilities are major causes of early exit from the working positions Objective: Our study is based on reviewing the use of the Work Ability Index (WAI) as a tool for measuring the working capacity and a prediction for a possible incapacity for work. Method: A literature search of the published articles between 2004 and January 2015 has been carried out on the following databases: PubMed, Osh Update, WOS, Cochrane, Lilacs, Ibecs, Scopus and Google Scholar. Results: 5 articles are selected after applying a inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conclusion: The existence of a relationship between the use of the WAI and its predictive value to receive disability pension is suggested. Whichever also include the social and economic environment of the workers. Additional studies should be conducted to include other job categories involving not only overload Physics.
