Justification: When a newly born is admitted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, there are also, along with it, a couple of parents that are blown away with this new reality which is different from the one imagined during the pregnancy. Objective: to establish the steps to reduce the stress of the parents of the newly born hospitalized at the NICU. Type and design: Descriptive; transversal. Methodology: it was made a form of questions in order to identify the cognitive, behavior and affective manifestations of the stress in 36 mothers and fathers with an Alpha of Cronbach: 0,914. Results: In emotional manifestations, the emotional instability with predisposition of wiping was outstanding with 13,6%. The behavior dimension reflects 13,4% with a change of the habits specifically in the lack of care in their personal look. The cognitive manifestations was of 10,1% with a lack of attention because of the sonorous irrelevant stimulus. Conclusions: we considered to diminish the stress manifestations of the parents through the setting of steps based on cognitive and behavior techniques.
