BERUMEN-ANGUIANO, Johaly Gabriela e BIVIANO-ANDRADE, Karla Montserrat. Damage control surgery in open vascular trauma of the popliteal artery due to gunshot wound in second-level hospital. Angiología [online]. 2022, vol.74, n.5, pp.257-260. Epub 21-Nov-2022. ISSN 1695-2987. https://dx.doi.org/10.20960/angiologia.00444.
The medical literature recognizes the importance of an early diagnosis of vascular trauma and advice on basic knowledge of damage control vascular surgery.
In Mexico, one of the most common etiologies for vascular injury is gunshot wounds. It is an emergency and most patients are referred to the nearest hospital, which is not always the best level for their care.
The magnitude of the damage will always depend on the type, site and elapsed time of the injury, with the main objective of an early approach and treatment, which should preferably be established within the range of the first 3 hours, in order to avoid secondary complications.
This case report deals with a patient with a history of gunshot wound to the popliteal artery, who was given an emergency approach with damage control surgery through vascular exploration and placement of a temporary shunt with his subsequent definitive treatment.
