LOPEZ, Marcelino et al. Mental health problems and social attitudes in the city of Seville: Main results from the study: "Mental health: images and reality". Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2010, vol.30, n.2, pp.219-248. ISSN 2340-2733.

Introduction: The mainresults from the study "Mental Health in the population: images and realities" in the general population from the city of Seville are described. The present study is a replication of a previous one, performed in the last years in a number of French speaking countries by the WHO Collaborating Centre in Lille (France). Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study of 920 people aged more than 18 years , with two main instruments: a standardized diagnostic interview (MINI) and a socio-anthropological questionnaire. Results and conclusions: We found a 19,4 % global prevalence of mental health problems in of the adult population, with the expected distributions of the different kinds of problems and sociodemographical variables. Social attitudes found were similar to those reflected in other studies on this topic, scoping from some archaic components derived from traditional images of "madness" to more modern notions such as "mental illness" and "depression". We conclude that this methodology may be a useful alternative to obtain local information that could permit to fight stigma and discrimination in mental health.
