GARCIA-HARO, Juan; GARCIA-PASCUAL, Henar  e  GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Marta. A contextual-phenomenological approach to suicide. Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2018, vol.38, n.134, pp.381-400.  Epub 01-Fev-2021. ISSN 2340-2733.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0211-57352018000200003.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among adolescents and adults in today's world. According to the World Health Organization, about 800.000 people commit suicide each year in the world, being the second leading cause of death in the 15 to 29 year age group. The usual way of dealing with this phenomenon both in the clinical practice and in academic research is through the biomedical model. Contrary to the biomedical model prevailing in mental health, this work bets for a defense of the contextual-phenomenological approach. The aim of this article is to present and discuss two perspectives of clinical understanding about suicide: the biomedical approach and the contextual-phenomenological one. The implications for both clinical and research are highlighted. It concludes that it is necessary to incorporate a phenomenological view that inserts suicidal ideation and behaviour in the context of people's life problems.
