Introduction: Obesity has become a chronic disease which prevalence is increasing exponentially in countries developed. Pregnant women with a higher body mass 30 kg/m2 index have higher risk of complications during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Maternal obesity has negative consequences for the fetus, increasing the prevalence of macrosomia, decreasing breastfeeding and increased the risk of obesity childhood. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine if the prevalence of Childhood obesity is associated to weight gain during pregnancy and the breastfeeding stage. Methodology: The design of this study is retrospective descriptive. It has been done in the city of Granada (Spain) between the months of October 2014 and June 2015. The study estimated a universe of 500 children from 8 to 12 years with overweight. The sample consisted of 54 children, all of them with overweight or obesity. Results: For the study there were included 27 boys and 27 girls. The average age was 10.65 ± 1.38 years, with an average weight of 66.05 kilos and an average size of 150.75 cm, equivalent to a mean BMI of 28.60.The Mothers studied gained an average of 16.17 kg of weight during pregnancy and only 2.83 months of breastfeeding on average. Conclusion: The excess of weight during pregnancy and decreased breastfeeding are related to child obesity at the age of 10.The prevention of obesity in children and adolescents should be prevented from pregnancy. One way of prevention could be the weight control of the mothers during pregnancy. It is also important to support the first days of postpartum for the establishment of breastfeeding in women with obesity, due the fact that they delay the lactogenesis.
