A precise knowledge of the vascular patterns can improve the results of the regional reconstruction of the pinna and layout the design of dependent regional flaps of the superficial temporal artery to the facial reconstruction. In Mexico, there are currently no anatomical descriptions of normal vascular variants of the superficial temporal artery. Our objective is the description of the anatomical variants of the superficial temporal artery through the dissection of this vessel in 12 tempo-parieto-occipital regions in corpses. In our results, the superficial temporal artery is always divided into two branches, anterior and posterior, this distribution is in the rear most quarter of the temporal region, being high bifurcation. The distribution of the vascular anatomy considering the largest caliber of the superficial temporal artery with respect to the posterior auricular artery, the absence of the latter in 4 of the regions studied, and the distance of such vessels from the external ear canal, suggest that in our population irrigation of the ear is dependent on the superficial temporal artery, downplaying the contribution of blood supply to this region by the posterior auricular artery. Our study provides results that indicate the existence of significant variations in regional vascular anatomy, justifying further studies that allow us a more detailed description thereof to increase the success of the surgery.
