OBANDO ZEGARRA, Roxana; AREVALO-IPANAQUE, Janet Mercedes; ALIAGA SANCHEZ, Ruth América e OBANDO ZEGARRA, Martina. Anxiety, stress and depression in emergency nurses Covid-19. Index Enferm [online]. 2020, vol.29, n.4, pp.225-229. Epub 01-Nov-2021. ISSN 1699-5988.
In the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, nursing faces situations that affect their psychosocial well-being on a daily basis. Negative thoughts and emotions spread, threatening the mental health of nurses. There have been several studies that inquire about the emotional reality of health professionals in Asia and Europe mainly. However, it is necessary to focus on Latin American nurses, where Peru represents one of the most affected countries.
Objective:
to determine the degree of anxiety, stress and depression presented by the nurses who care for patients with suspected Covid-19.
Methodology:
a descriptive cross-sectional study, with a non-probabilistic sample by quotas of 126 nursing professionals from the emergency service of two level III public hospitals in Lima and Callao, in Peru. The data were collected during the month of May 2020, using the DASS-21 scale via virtual. The descriptive analysis was complemented with chi square associations.
Results:
39.1% of the nurses presented some degree of anxiety, 24.6% some degree of depression and 8.8% some degree of stress. The female sex is associated with the 3 conditions studied. Other characteristics associated with any condition are age, years of service, and location of the hospital.
Conclusion:
The nurses who attend to patients suspected of Covid-19 in the emergency services, present greater anxiety than depression. In few cases they presented stress.
