This article presents an example of the conceptual-theoretical-empirical subtraction strategy. The result is a proposed middle range theory of drug use in primary caregivers of people with cancer. It is developed from Roy's Adaptation Model and the literature review. For the nursing profession, this proposal offers an alternative to identify the factors that may be related to the use of drugs such as alcohol, tobacco and non-prescribed medications in primary caregivers. As well as to understand this phenomenon and in the future, to continue with research and to favor the prevention of drug use.
