ACERO SANZ, Julio; DE PAZ HERMOSO, Víctor; CONCEJO CUTOLI, Carlos  e  FERNANDEZ GARCIA, Antonio. Treatment of the atrophic posterior maxilla using the sinus grafting technique and the placement of dental implants. RCOE [online]. 2002, vol.7, n.1, pp.35-42. ISSN 1138-123X.

Objective: To present the treatment of the atrophic posterior maxilla using the sinus lift technique and dental implants placement. Material and Method: We have carried out a prospective study in a series of 78 sinus lift procedures performed in 60 patients during a 5-year period. Two groups were analized: Cases with more than 5 mm of residual bone height were treated in a single stage procedure with simultaneous sinus lift and implants placement. In more atrophic cases, implants were placed after bone graft consolidation. Results: 50 one-stage procedures with simultaneous placement of 89 implants were carried out. 8 implants were lost in this group. 28 cases were treated as a two-stage procedure. Iliac crest grafts were performed in 27 of these cases. Up until now, 38 implants were placed in 18 of these cases with only one fixture failure. Rupture of the sinusal membrane was the most frequent intraoperative complication (15 cases, 19%). Conclusion: Treatment of the atrophic posterior maxilla with the sinus lift technique shows good results, specially in the two-stage procedure with iliac crest bone graft and secondary implants placement.
