Early retirement is a heterogeneous experience with regard to both the way the exit from the working life is carried out and the personal and psychosocial consequences. In order to explore relationships between socio-demographic variables, causes of early retirement and satisfaction with post-working life, we administered an adaptation of the Retirement Satisfaction Inventory (Floyd et al., 1992) to a sample of 638 Spanish early retirees with an average age of 61.28. One-factor ANOVA was used for data analysis. Concerning the reasons for early retirement, pursuing personal interests was more important for women than for men. Men highlighted health problems and pressures from employer as reasons for early retirement to a greater extent than women. Highly educated early retirees were more interested in early retirement and early retirees with higher professional status showed a better adaptation to retirement. Knowing the relationships between socio-demographic characteristics, motivation towards retirement and retirement satisfaction is a first step to develop more complex analysis of the early-retirement experiences.
