GEBRIM, Cyanéa Ferreira Lima et al. Process indicators for the prevention of surgical site infection from the perspective of patient safety. Enferm. glob. [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.44, pp.264-275. ISSN 1695-6141.

In 2008 the World Health Organization launched the second Global Patient Safety Challenge, entitled Safe Surgery Saves Lives. This challenge prompted this study to assess conformity to process indicators for the prevention of surgical site infection in the perioperative period in patients undergoing surgery in a university hospital in Central Brazil. Method: Analytical cross-sectional retrospective study conducted by reviewing the medical records of 700 patients ≥18 years undergoing surgical procedures during the years 2008-2010. The study used a structured questionnaire evaluated according to national guidelines. For data analysis, SPSS v.15 for Windows was used. Results: In 35.4% of process indicators, compliance was indicated in: the time of hair removal, antimicrobial prophylaxis before surgery, and sterilization of the operative field. In 64.6%, some non-compliance was found with regard to the length of preoperative hospitalization, method for hair removal, antimicrobial prophylaxis, thermal and glycemic control in diabetics, and inspection of records of surgical kits. Conclusions: This study highlights the necessity to review management decisions, to increase investment with regard to compliance with process indicators as part of the organizational structure, to promote a culture of quality and safety in surgical patient service along with keeping nursing staff up to date with requirements for quality of service from the World Alliance for Patient Safety.
