PEDRAZ MARCOS, Azucena; GARCIA PEREA, Eva  e  PALMAR SANTOS, Ana María. Florence Nightingale and The Times Correspondents on the Crimean War. Temperamentvm [online]. 2020, vol.16, e13164.  Epub 06-Jun-2022. ISSN 1699-6011.

Objective:

Document the activity of Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, through newspaper and epistolary sources.

Methods:

Documentary research in The Times newspaper, between September 1854 and July 1856, based on the comparison with the Florence Nightingale correspondence of the same period, edited by Sue M. Goldie.

Results:

Florence Nightingale's activity in the Crimean War, documented by the war correspondents of The Times newspaper, is divided into three main phases: the sanitary conditions of the British Army prior to Florence Nightingale's arrival, Florence Nightingale's work at Scutari, the recognition of the British population for her work.

Conclusions:

The Crimean War was the first modern war, in which the telegraph and war correspondents played a fundamental role. In this context, the figure and activity of Florence Nightingale, tenacious and indefatigable, achieves a multiplier effect, thanks to the media.
