PINILLA-RELLO, A et al. Review of non-pharmacological treatment of pain in neonates with oral sucrose. Rev. OFIL·ILAPHAR [online]. 2023, vol.33, n.3, pp.307-313. Epub 28-Fev-2024. ISSN 1699-714X. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s1699-714x2023000300015.
A bibliographic review was carried out on the efficacy and safety of oral sucrose as a non-pharmacological treatment of neonatal pain. Clinical trials, meta-analyzes, and systematic reviews published in the PUBMED and Cochrane Library databases between 2010 and 2020 were reviewed. The results of the 14 articles selected for review showed that sucrose is effective for the non-pharmacological treatment of pain in preterm and term neonates. In addition, when combined with other non-pharmacological treatments it has a synergistic and enhanced effect. Adverse effects related to its use have not been reported in any study, which is why it is considered a safe treatment. The dosage of sucrose has been studied and there is evidence of its use in clinical practice, but it would be necessary to reach a consensus to know which is the most optimal dosage in each painful procedure to reduce the variability in its dosage.
