It is well-known that Virginia Woolf is considered as being one of the most important writers in the 20^th century. In this work, some of the most eminent aspects of the writer´s life and literary work are analyzed briefly. After some brief comments on her biography, it is studied the relationship between her literary style and some of her well-known works with the symptoms of the manic-depressive psychosis which she suffered from. Throughout this work, her relationship with language is highlighted: her dependance on it and the insuffiency of language in the late period of her life. Finally, a quick revision of the main psychological theories concerning mania is made, especially giving relevance to the psychoanalytic approach and to the so-called "cognitive-behavioural theories of third generation", due to its studies of the relationship between language and mental illnesses.
