Upon outlining the key psychological role that the family group exerts on the children, we have examined the current available research data analyzing the potential impact that the separation or divorce may have on them. A special emphasis has been dedicated to review the pros and cons of the shared and individual modalities of child custody. Finally, we have included a description of several syndromes such as the Parental Alienation Syndrome, Malicious Parent Syndrome, and the Severe Interference Syndrome, as well the late-onset False Memory Syndrome, provided their negative effect on the process of separation or divorce.
