Fetal programming means that during prenatal period adverse environment might increase the susceptibility for metabolic changes later in life. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of pre-and postnatal malnutrition in the presentation of obesity and components of metabolic syndrome (MS) later in life. Methods: A literature electronic search on PubMed and EBSCO was conducted. The following term was searched: "Undernutrition in early life and obesity", from studies published from November 1997 through January 2014.
