We describe the fundamental aspects of the diagnosis of dependence of alcohol and the treatment for alcohol dependence. We analyse the steps taken for a systematic diagnosis (DSM-IV criteria and CIE 10 criteria, diagnostic surveys of alcohol dependence and biological markers) and the treatment for deshabituation.
