This study aimed to identify physical, psychological and social violence among among, its relation to self-esteem and the experience of living with violence. We interviewed 300 women who atended the CENAVI -Mexico in 2003/4 and were victims of intimate partner violence. Two data collection instruments were used: QIVM - Questionnaire for the identification of violence in women and the Self-Esteem Scale. Participants were between 16 and 65 years old; possessed different education levels; 66% were married; 75% were living with the same partner and 88% were Catholic. Spearman’s test and multivariate analysis revealed a relation between violence and self-esteem; the higher the age and violence levels, the lower these women’s self-esteem. We also found a relation between time spent living with the aggressor, family antecedents of violence and the victims’ self-esteem.
