Objective: to know the stereotypes that older people of a city of Spain have toward their own age group, distinguishing between institutionalized elderly and living at home. Method: cross-sectional descriptive study on a sample of 100 elderly between 72 and 82 years old, living half in a nursing home and the other half at their home. The information was collected through a self-administered questionnaire that included 30 adjectives referring to the elderly themselves and should respond depending on the degree of agreement or disagreement with each of the features, using a Likert scale with 5 options for each ítem. Outcomes: institutionalized elderly have a more negative self-perception and stereotypes to themselves that the elderly living in their homes. Certain features such as the low value of this social group are features common to both groups. Conclusions: it is necessary to promote an attitude in society that the elderly population will stimulate and increase their self-esteem, integration and assessment. Similarly, policy nursing homes must promote an attitude aimed at promoting self-perception of the elderly residents in them.
