Asbest is a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals widespread in the world. The principal varieties of asbestos are serpentines and amphiboles. Asbest reaches human when the fiber an particles are inhaled. The exposure can cause irreversible diseases, like asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma, pleural plaques and lung cancer. All of them have a long latency period. In 1978, asbest was considered a carcinogenic substance and was totally forbidden in Spain during 2002.
