Abstract

Background/aims: Recently, new materials such as condensable composites, ormocers and the so-called «intelligent materials» have appeared on the market aiming to reduce some of the most important problems of conventional composites. The objective of this study was to compare the marginal microleakage in class II MOD-restorations filled with this type of materials. Method: Class II MOD-cavities were prepared in fifty multi-rooted human teeth. The teeth were randomly assigned into one of five groups (n = 10). Group 1: Prime & Bond NT, SureFil, group 2: Ariston Liner, Ariston pHc, group 3: One Coat Bond, Synergy, group 4: One Step, Pyramid and group 5: Etch & Prime 3.0, Definite. The specimens were thermocycled and immersed in 2% methylene blue for seven days at 37°C. After longitudinal sectioning, dye penetration was evaluated using an optical microscope at 10x. Results: No significant differences occurred between groups 3, 4 and 5, but these groups showed significant differences compared to the other two groups (1 and 2), which show greater microleakage scores. Conclusions: The leakage produced in the groups restored with Prime & Bond, Surefil, and Ariston Liner, Ariston pHc is significantly higher than the one observed in the groups restored with One Coat Bond, Synergy, One Step, Pyramid, and Etch & Prime 3.0, Definite.
