Abstract

BIRBE FORASTER, Joan  and  SERRA SERRAT, Marta. Onthodontics in orthognathic surgery. RCOE [online]. 2006, vol.11, n.5-6, pp.547-557. ISSN 1138-123X.

A good coordination between the orthodontist and the surgeon is essential in order to achieve a good outcome for the orthognathic surgery patient. The surgeon should understand the treatment plan from the orthodontist point of view and the orthodontist should understand and identify the goals of the pre-surgical orthodontic treatment, as well as the limitations of the surgical treatment. Satisfactory outcomes are the result of a good diagnosis and treatment of the dentofacial deformity and a good integration of the knowledge of the different specialists implied. The aim of this article is to summarize the main features of the diagnosis, objectives, and treatment plan, including the retention phase, which both the surgeon and orthodontist should follow in order to achieve a good treatment outcome.

Keywords : Orthodontics; Orthognathic; Orthognathic Surgery.
