MANZANO ANGUA, Juan Manuel. Anthropometric evaluation of the stable chronic renal population under haemodialysis in the province of Seville. Rev Soc Esp Enferm Nefrol [online]. 2006, vol.9, n.3, pp.66-73. ISSN 1139-1375.

Malnutrition is a very frequent health problem among the population with chronic renal insufficiency in dialysis, and therefore nutritional evaluation is a very important aspect for nursing to bear in mind. Main objective: to tabulate the percentage distribution of the clinically stable chronic renal population under treatment with haemodialysis in the province of Seville. Working hypothesis: stable chronic renal patients under haemodialysis present lower anthropometric parameters than healthy subjects of the same sex and age group. This was a descriptive, transversal, comparative, multi-centric study performed between October 2004 and September 2005. Study sample: 157 patients with an average age of 59 + 14 years, 34.4% women and 65.6% men. The clinical stability criterion was defined and direct and indirect anthropometric parameters were recorded, as well as socio-demographic data, potential factors of malnutrition, data related to dialysis treatment and other useful data. The majority of patients studied aged > 60 revealed anthropometric measurements with higher percentile 5 and 95 values than those of the healthy subjects studied by Alastrué in 1982. With these findings, we can not accept our working hypothesis. We consider that the results obtained could have been affected by the tendency to obesity of the general population, as well as the technological developments in dialysis, pharmacological, dietetic treatment and the better care given by the professionals responsible for attending the chronic renal population.

Palabras clave : anthropometric measurements; renal insufficiency; haemodialysis.
