Abstract

Athletes throughout his career through a series of transitions (Wylleman, Alfermann & Lavallee, 2004). Access to elite sport is a crucial transition that has received little attention in the literature. The aim of the study was to determine the factors that facilitated access to the top division of eight international Spanish basketball players. Deductive qualitative methodology was used and technique for data collection was a semi-structured interview. Factors that in the opinion of the eight players interviewed facilitated their access to high competition were: a) their level of sports competition, b) opportunities received and how they take advantage, c) not to have serious injuries and d) existence of regulations that favored joining the high competition.
