ALVES, N.  y  FIGUEIREDO DEANA, N.. Evaluation of bony structures involved in surgical technique for installation of zygomatic implants in edentulous macerated skulls. Avances en Periodoncia [online]. 2016, vol.28, n.1, pp.29-33. ISSN 2340-3209.

Introduction: The zygomatic implant (ZI) is an alternative for edentulous or partially dentate patients who do not have enough maxilla bone to hold the conventional dental implant and for cases in which the bone graft is not suitable , presenting success rate above 90 %. The aim of this study was to analyze the bony structures involved in the installation of ZI, considering gender and ethnicity. Matherial and methods: Were included 96 skulls of adults, edentates, both sexes, leucoderms and melanoderms. We used a digital caliper to perform, bilaterally, the following measures: 1) RA-CPS: distance from the alveolar ridge at the region of upper second premolar to the posterosuperior margin of the zygomatic bone; 2) ECPS: zygomatic bone thickness at the level of posterosuperior margin; 3) ECM: zygomatic bone thickness in its middle portion. Results: The mean values obtained for RA- CPS, ECPS and ECM in milimeters were, respectively: leucoderm females 52.09, 2.04 and 4.30; melanoderm women 53.47, 1.99 and 4.93; leucoderm males 55.49, 2.28 and 5.33; melanoderm male 57.01, 2.22 and 6.01. Discussion: We conclude that leucoderm individuals, of both sexes, presented lower mean values than melanoderm individuals. Furthermore, the females presented lower mean values than males for all measures. The values found in this study can be used as a parameter in surgical technique planning of ZI placement, avoiding risks of complications.
