In 2007, the Spanish Ministry of Defense substituted the armored vehicles deployed in operations abroad and bought RG-31 vehicles, 8 of them in the medical version. This vehicle is characterized for a high level protection against explosives and mine attacks. The objective of this study is to describe the RG-31 vehicle, present the specific characteristics of the ambulance version, propose a model for its medicalization, compare it to other medical armored vehicles and present the lessons learned by the authors during their deployment in Afghanistan.
