We study the life and work of one of the most important Spanish military surgeons of the 20th century. He was a favorite disciple of D. Mariano Gómez Ulla (1877-1945). Both, were Galicians and had studied in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Manuel Gómez Durán as his teacher, demonstrated a great organizational and surgical capacity, in Africa and in the Spanish civil war. Gómez Durán published more than Gómez Ulla, although in his works it is clear the influence and the surgical style of his teacher. His main merit was to collect his experience in war surgery, at the time of production, in the form of careful medical records. To the extent, that his summit on the subject “War Surgery” in two volumes, was published in 1938, before the end of the civil war. When peace arrived, he was professor of surgery of war in the Academy of Military Health, and Head of Surgery of the Hospital Gómez Ulla. Doctor of the Provincial Benefit of Madrid, and several hospitals for priests. He received multiple honors as the Laureate Cross of San Fernando (collective) for his outstanding work in the war front of the University City of Madrid. Pope John XXIII named him Commander of the Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great. He was fellow of the Royal National Academy of Medicine.
