Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The nursing educational intervention is a system of didactic-pedagogical activities that are used when a problem is detected, so certain actions are planned preceded by a diagnosis, in order to raise the level of knowledge of individuals through methods and techniques, combining practical and theoretical strategies. The caregiver is a fundamental piece for the care and achievement of autonomy in the elderly. OBJECT. To evaluate the effect of an educational nursing intervention on the knowledge of the caregiver for the eldery’s care. METHODS. Quasi-experimental study in 17 caregivers of older adults, before and after an educational intervention. An instrument of 17 questions was applied; the data collection was obtained through three home visits. The study was carried out in accordance with the ethical principles of health research. RESULTS. 94.1% (16) were women, the level of knowledge in the first application was 47.05%; in the post-intervention application, the knowledge reflected was 76.47%. The significant post-intervention changes were in the feeding areas, which improves sleep, hydration, elimination and general health, as well as in the management of anxiety. The results of the Wilcoxon test were positive. CONCLUSIONS. The educational nursing intervention in the caregiver was adapted educationally and culturally since each caregiver had different abilities that were oriented, improved and in other cases the knowledge was reinforced.
