Social skills and self-concept are two constructs that research in psychology has related to mental health; a negative self-concept or a poor command of social skills have been typified as risk factors for various psychosocial problems. This research had three main objectives: (a) to study the relationship between social skills and self-concept in university students belonging to a technological institution of the state of Jalisco, Mexico, (b) to compare both variables according to the sex of the students, and (c) identify the strength of self-concept dimensions in the prediction of social skills. The sampling used was incidental non-probabilistic and was formed by a total of 482 students. The results indicated that (a) there is a medium and positive correlation between the variables of the study, (b) there are significant differences by sex in the total score of the Self-concept and in the emotional, physical and academic-work factors, and (c) through a Multiple linear regression analysis, a model was obtained that refers to the emotional, physical and social factors of Self-concept as the main predictors of Social Skills. With these results, the association between the variables of the study is confirmed and reaffirms the idea that in people (especially young people) self-concept is an aspect that shapes the development of their social skills and, therefore, the characteristics of their interpersonal communication and their psychological adjustment to the environment. Finally, the study recommends encouraging activities that increase the self-concept of people and thus prevent a possible deficit in their social skills.
