Abstract

HERRERA, Patricia et al. Challenges in the use of competencies in pre-clinical years in medical school. FEM (Ed. impresa) [online]. 2015, vol.18, n.3, pp.189-196. ISSN 2014-9840.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S2014-98322015000400007.

Introduction: The implementation of a new curriculum for a school of medicine, based on the development of a number of skills that are considered essential in the formation of professionals in the field of health, involves the design and implementation of a series of instructional strategies focused on the student's learning process. Aim: To identify and describe the challenges, problems, solutions, achievements, failures and the learning obtained to implement strategies and create study materials, specifically for the teaching of medicine by competencies. Subjects and methods: A series of strategies and study materials were designed by a multidisciplinary group of teachers applied to six groups of first year students of medicine. Results: The student different profiles and the traditional view that teachers have of teaching, as well as the infrastructure of the educational institution under study require a number of changes in teaching such as: new teaching skills, more workshops for professors, and develop methods to adapt to the infrastructure that exists among others. Conclusions: Changes do occur, but its results will not be seen immediately. The application of a specific type of group discussion methodology in the implementation of competency instructional strategies at a university with the large amount of students and teachers is a challenge of great dimensions, so it is considered that it will take some years to be able to bring it to pass.
