Objectives: To characterize the profile of mothers with positive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV+) and birth conditions of newborns. Method: A retrospective descriptive study, quantitative approach performed in a public maternity in Fortaleza, Ceará-Brazil. All the participants were HIV + seropositive mothers and their newborns admitted in 2009, totaled 27, recorded in the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (NUVE). Results: the mothers, 37.0% were aged between 21-25 years, 11.1% used drugs, 48.1% had had one to two pregnancies, 40.7% had not carried out at least six prenatal consultations, 96, 3% had a cesarean delivery, 74.0% used Zidovudine (AZT). Concerning the newborn 74.0% were 45-49 cm tall, 63.0%, head circumference 32-34 cm, 63.0%, chest circumference 30-33 cm, 14.8% weighed> 3500 g, 18.5% were born preterm, 3.7% had Apgar in the first minute of 4-7 and 96.3%> 7 and 37.1% had transient tachypnea. Conclusion: Although most women had done less than six prenatal visits, there were a significant number of pregnant women with antiretroviral therapy in pregnancy and childbirth. The number of newborns sent to rooming was quite low. Birth weight, height and head circumference were mostly satisfactory and equivalent to that reported in literature.
