Objective

To determine if machismo, family support, health perception and self-efficacy influence in the self-care activities of the man with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methodology

The design of the study was correlational descriptive, with a sample of 14 primary attention centers.

Results

Machismo correlated negatively with family support and self-efficacy. While self-care was explained the 30.5% of the variance, the predictor variables were the family conducts, the self-efficacy, the sub-scales of machismo, work supremacy, being independent and violent.

Conclusions

Machismo may influence directly to self-care and indirectly, through family support and self-efficacy
