Abstract

In this study it is described the results of an epidemiological community study on the prevalence of both general and specific mental disorders. A two stage design was use according a random sample distribution by conglomerates. In the first stage 800 adult persons was the final sample; second stage, 114 adults were assessed. The assessment instruments were GHQ-28 and the CIDI structured interview. The results indicate an estimated prevalence rate of 18,42% of general mental disorders. These rates are highest in women. According to specific disorders, the anxiety disorders was most prevalent disorder, followed by substance abuse and affective disorders. It is outlined that substance abuse disorders occupy the second position, displeasing the affective disorders, which agrees with other studies realized with similar methodology.
