What are the major methodological approaches in psychotherapy research? What have been the most significant constraints and stimulus for their development? What are their advantages and limits? In face of the innumerous methodological lines within psychotherapy research, this article draws an historical overview toward a comprehension of what is nowadays researched and how it is researched within the domain of psychological treatments. The major methodological trends in this area within the last 50 years are described and contextualized from a scientific, social and economic point of view. The basic methodological concepts are described, together with a reflection of the future trends.
