Abstract

A descriptive study was carried out between October and November 2010. Objective: To determine the presence of burnout syndrome in one-dimensional approach freshmen of medicine at the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín (UCMH). Methods: We randomly selected 70 freshmen, 35 of each sex (85% of the population), which was applied to the instrument Unidimensional Scale of Student Burnout. Results: Female sex (without Burnout 0, Burnout mild 25, moderate 10 Burnout, Burnout deep 0), had the highest incidence of burnout compared with men (no 10 Burnout, Burnout mild 24, moderate Burnout 1, Burnout deep 0). There is a slight prevalence of burnout in both sexes. In the male students were found not only one with Burnout and moderate. In females all had studied Burnout and a considerable part moderate. There were no cases of deep Burnout in either sex. Conclusions: Medical students in first year of the UCMH are affected mostly by the burnout syndrome. Females are more affected than males.
