Abstract

MEDINA, M.L.; MEDINA, M.G.  and  MERINO, L.A.. Current considerations about the presence of the human papilomavirus in the oral cavity. Av Odontoestomatol [online]. 2010, vol.26, n.2, pp.71-80. ISSN 2340-3152.

The infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is considered a sexually transmitted disease and it is one of the most widespread viral diseases among the general population. Most of these infections are asymptomatic or subclinical and they can remain unnoticed unless the virus could be detected in infected cells by molecular methods. Only some infections are chronic or persistent, and these possess the higher oncogenic potential. It is important to spread the need for early identification of oral manifestations of HPV and to highlight the importance of prompt treatment, which is crucial for improving the prognosis of oral cancer.

Keywords : Human papilloma virus; oral cavity.
