Abstract

CARRIQUIRY, C.; SEOANE, J.; AYCAGUER, O.  and  LONDINSKY, M.. Breast reconstruction with Holmström's thoracodorsal flap: analysis of 6 years experience. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.2, pp.83-92. ISSN 1989-2055.

The authors' clinical experience with a method for breast reconstruction published in the international medical literature by Holmström and Lossing almost two decades ago is presented. This method has received little attention outside Scandinavia. The lateral thoracodorsal flap is a fasciocutaneous transposition flap without an established axial pattern. Together with a submuscular implant, postmastectomy reconstruction can be achieved in a short operative time and with little surgical dissection. Relevant technical details are highlighted regarding design, elevation and transposition of the flap. The authors' experience include 21 patients and 22 flaps (1 bilateral case), operated as a secondary procedure from 1999 to 2005, with a mean follow-up of 34.5 months. The complication rate and unsatisfactory results have been comparatively low. We believe that this method provides an option to take into account when other techniques requiring implants are considered, such as tissue expansion or the latissimus dorsi flap.
