Abstract

BARON-THAIDIGSMANN, Jesús. Surgical humanitarian campaigns of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in collaboration with Hermanos San Juan de Dios. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.4, pp.425-437. ISSN 1989-2055.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0376-78922017000500014.

The surgical humanitarian campaigns of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) have their origin in 2000 due to a personal effort from the Vocal of Institutional Relations of SECPRE at that time, and the Administrative Director of the Clinical Home San Juan de Dios in Chiclayo (Peru). This has been the beginning of the institutional cooperation between SECPRE and Juan Ciudad Non Governmental Organization for Development that over the years has become professional, ending up with the collaboration agreement between both institutions in 2015.

A total of 15 campaigns have been developed, the first one was a double campaign, in Chiclayo. From 2015 onwards the campaigns are carried out in Monrovia (Liberia). Fifty six different professionals have participated, all of them would repeat the experience and it has been very important in their lives. More than a thousand surgical procedures took place, keeping in mind that in Peru there is a higher percentage of facial congenital malformations, whereas in Liberia most of the pathologies are burn sequels.

Our experience leads us to the conclusion that it's important to have two organizing centers, one at origin and another one at destiny, for a good design of the surgical activity, and 2 plastic surgeons with a supplementary training for each workign team, being the campaigns limited to two weeks.

Most of the participants have repeated the experience with another Non Governmental Organizations, while our society is acting as a formative engine of cohesive human teams with high capacity for surgical resolution.

Keywords : Humanitarian Plastic Surgery; Burns sequels; Congenital malformations; Reconstructive surgery.
