Abstract

Background and Objective

Hair loss and the loss of response of our body, responds to a series of biochemical disorders that in a short time affects the microscopic structure of the hair follicle irreversibly. So far these trigger factors have not been identified clearly and in theory, the growth factors could help stabilize the hair follicle complex by providing greater oxygenation and nutrition through neovascularization.

Our aim is to determine the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for the management of non-scarring alopecies, studying the time required to demonstrate a decrease in hair loss, for healthy hair growth, time prudent to observe a higher population density of hair and patient satisfaction.

Methods

We carried out an experimental, prospective and longitudinal clinical study of follow-up of 261 patients with male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) up to grade IV and AGA women up to grade II, and in both sexes with telogen effluvium diagnosed by clinical history, tricrogram and controlled with digital photography with 6X microscopy. All patients underwent ambulatory intradermal PRP on the scalp under endovenous sedation and 100% oxygenation. The study was conducted between April 2013 and April 2015 at the Peruvian Institute of Cellular Engineering - INGECEL AC.

Results

We observed on average that the decrease in hair loss occurred at 4.56 weeks, evidence of hair growth at 10.8 weeks. The increase in density was evident in males at 4.6 months and in the female group at 7.25 months. To measure satisfaction, the visual analogue scale 1 to 10 was used, obtaining an average of 7.6 in women and 7 in men. There were no cases without positive response to treatment or failures.

Conclusions

Regardless of differences in recovery times between men and women in response, we believe that the use of growth factors decreases hair loss in no scar injuries prolonging the life of the follicle, improving the quality of this, increases hair density and carries a high degree of patient satisfaction with the results achieved.
