Abstract

VILLAFUERTE-VELEZ, Cesar Kelly. Protg-Social treatment program of the gigantomasty, Bahia-Brazil. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2018, vol.44, n.3, pp.341-346.  Epub Feb 08, 2021. ISSN 1989-2055.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0376-78922018000300020.

In the state of Bahia in Brazil, where more than 73.5% of the population declare theirselves as black and brunette (IBGE 2010), the giant breast is a common pathology that affects women in all the social levels, especially those less favored. Despite this condition affects physically and psychologically, in our country, its treatment isn't considered a priority and the few treated cases show to the growth of a row of people with the same hope for a solution.

For decades, some plastic surgeons, in an altruistic way, have given a sporadic contribution, but it was only since 2008 when, the politic administration of the city of Feira De Santana- Bahia (Brasil) with the mayor in office Dr. Tarzicio Pimenta, the president of the Foundation of the Women Hospital, Dr. Jair de Jesus, and the plastic surgeon Dr. Cesar Kelly Villafuerte Velez, united their efforts creating the first and unique specific institutional program of Brazil, PROTG (Social Treatment Program of the Gigantomasty). In this program, protocols and schedules are defined, and 2 for 3 patients are operated each month, achieving in 2018 more than 200 benefited patients. In 10 years of activity, 1.115 women were examined, of which 250 patients were selected because they met the requirements and 204 were operated with the Thorek-Pitanguy technique with a mammary tissue removal of 4.000 to 8.750 gr (average of 4.350 gr).

Despite of the politics inconstances, the director of the foundation Mrs. Gilbert Lucas and the actual mayor Mr. José Ronaldo, continue to give the integral support to this program.
